LAST 24 HOURS

  • RUSSIAN EMBASSY BOMBING — ISIS-K has claimed credit for a suicide bombing at the Russian Embassy in Kabul that killed 6 people (including 2 Russian embassy staff members) and injured 10 Afghan civilians. A local police commander claimed the suicide bomber was recognized and shot by a Taliban security guard at the Embassy before he could do greater damage. The incident occurred as negotiations with Russia to supply oil to Afghanistan were being finalized.

  • DEADLY EARTHQUAKE IN THE EAST— A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 10 and injuring as many as 50 more. Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman provinces appear to be the hardest hit; damage estimates are still coming in from those areas. Recently repaired drinking water pipelines were damaged, driving fears about another outbreak of cholera in the affected area. The death toll from the earthquake is expected to climb as rural communities report casualties over the next few days.

  • ROCKET ATTACKS CONFIRMED — The Ministry of the Interior confirmed earlier reporting of rocket attacks in Kabul’s Police District 3 and denied rumors that the attacks were being conducted by drones. The Ministry says that 4 people are currently under arrest and alleged that they are tied to the National Resistance Front. Drones continue to be observed on patrol in several parts of Afghanistan and are fueling rumors of US targeting operations.

  • PROPPING UP THE AFGHANI — The Da Afghanistan Bank auctioned off $12 million USD to bolster the strength of the Afghani.

Jihadists, liberators, or administrators of Afghanistan? The Taliban respond.

By Wajahat S. Khan – GZERO

The Taliban celebrated in style the anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan last week.

They assembled at Bagram airbase, the last military outpost of the 20-year American occupation. Flags were hoisted, leftover US military equipment displayed, and Taliban soldiers wore uniforms shed by fleeing forces loyal to the former government. Speeches were made, and the Quran recited.
