RUSSIAN EMBASSY BOMBING — ISIS-K has claimed credit for a suicide bombing at the Russian Embassy in Kabul that killed 6 people (including 2 Russian embassy staff members) and injured 10 Afghan civilians. A local police commander claimed the suicide bomber was recognized and shot by a Taliban security guard at the Embassy before he could do greater damage. The incident occurred as negotiations with Russia to supply oil to Afghanistan were being finalized.
DEADLY EARTHQUAKE IN THE EAST— A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 10 and injuring as many as 50 more. Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman provinces appear to be the hardest hit; damage estimates are still coming in from those areas. Recently repaired drinking water pipelines were damaged, driving fears about another outbreak of cholera in the affected area. The death toll from the earthquake is expected to climb as rural communities report casualties over the next few days.
ROCKET ATTACKS CONFIRMED — The Ministry of the Interior confirmed earlier reporting of rocket attacks in Kabul’s Police District 3 and denied rumors that the attacks were being conducted by drones. The Ministry says that 4 people are currently under arrest and alleged that they are tied to the National Resistance Front. Drones continue to be observed on patrol in several parts of Afghanistan and are fueling rumors of US targeting operations.
