  • BODY OF HELMAND TRIBAL ELDER FOUND IN CAPITAL – Haji Adam Khan Popalzai’s body was discovered yesterday riddled with bullets in southern Helmand.  The elder had been reported missing several days ago and police have yet to speculate on the circumstances surrounding his killing.

  • PAKISTAN-AFGHANISTAN BORDER ALONG DURAND LINE REOPENED – After weeks of being closed due to multiple border skirmishes, the crossing at Kharlachi was reopened yesterday to all traffic.  

  • HERAT SECURITY DIALOGUE BEGINS IN DUSHANBE – The 10th Herat Security Dialogue opened in Tajikistan with statements from regional and international delegates.  Afghanistan was the dominant topic and several regional participants once again reiterated concerns about a growing threat of terrorism from the stricken country.  Many of the

  • delegates voiced concerns about the plight of women under Taliban rule.  The Taliban responded by saying that women’s rights are protected under the new regime.  Tajikistan was chosen for the site of the summit due to security concerns in Afghanistan.

  • LIGHT QUAKE REPORTED NEAR JALALABAD – A 4.5 magnitude earthquake shook rural communities near Jalalabad yesterday night.  

  • INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MIGRATION (IOM) ISSUES REPORT – The focus of the report was on how climate change has exacerbated the crisis in Afghanistan.  Notable points from the report:

    • 97% of the population lives below the poverty line

    • Wheat production has fallen by 30%

    • The Taliban takeover is responsible for low employment in urban areas

    • Electricity production/imports are less than half of what is required to sustain industry

PAKISTAN

  • Pakistani authorities announced they have killed 10 Baloch separatists in a security operation in Balochistan.

The Afghan Taliban has moved swiftly to consolidate control over Afghanistan and eliminate any opposition to its rule since the August 2021 collapse of the Afghan Republic.
