AFGHAN NATIONAL REPORTED TO HAVE CARRIED OUT SUICIDE BOMBING IN BANNU – Reports from officials in Pakistan’s government and the Pakistani press have stated the suicide bomber who killed at least 2 civilians and injured at least 10 others on Sunday was an Afghan citizen. The man was said to have been known to the intelligence service and was an affiliate with the Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group. However, some are questioning the proof provided and believe the individual was not an Afghan but is being used by the regime in Islamabad to portray all Afghans in Pakistan as a threat.
BADAKHSHAN GOVERNOR SUMMONED TO KANDAHAR OVER RECENT TROUBLES – The situation in Badakhshan has grown worse and the supreme leader has reportedly stepped in to try and resolve the problem. For several weeks, the Province has been under the microscope, and a ‘special team’ has been sent from Kabul to assess the situation. At issue is a dispute between the Taliban’s Army Chief of Staff and the Provincial Governor. The supreme leader called the Governor to Kandahar to discuss the matter and he reportedly flew by Army transport at approximately 1500hrs local time in Fayzabad. There are several issues that have emerged and China has repeatedly expressed concern over the free movement of ETIM militants in the Province. A recent satellite analysis of Islamic Mosques in China has stirred concerns among Muslim populations that Beijing is attempting to eradicate Islam from Chinese society. Sources in Fayzabad say that ETIM has been using the report to call for a jihad against China. It is unlikely that Kandahar wants the dispute in Badakhshan to affect major economic investment deals with China that are underway.

KABUL LIKELY TO SEE INCREASED SECURITY PRESENCE – Based on the recently reported activities of Resistance groups in Kabul, most anticipate an increased security threat posture by Taliban forces. Limited house searches can be expected in select districts and security checkpoints are likely to be reinforced. Sources in Kabul say that the Taliban have not been successful in penetrating the Afghanistan Freedom Front and GDI officials do not have a solid grasp of who they are and where they are operating from. However, few disagree that a strong response will be forthcoming from the Taliban. At-risk Afghans should avoid lingering near security personnel/checkpoints and be cognizant of possible searches and high-speed military convoys on city streets.

Former PM Imran Khan is due in court to face charges in the Cypher Case. Security is expected to be extremely tight near the Federal Judicial Complex and along the route from Adiala Jail.
A former adviser to Imran Khan was reportedly the victim of an ‘acid attack’ outside his home in Great Britain two days ago. Mirza Shahzad Akbar caused some injuries to his body but missed his eyes. He did not elaborate on who he thought was behind the attack.
Polls conducted recently show that support for the PTI party is strong in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but has ebbed to all-time lows in Sindh before the upcoming elections.
