LAST 24 HOURS:

  • A recent UN report concludes that the Taliban and al-Qaeda have reaffirmed their mutual cooperation and support. A similar report by the US Department of Defense has warned of an emerging threat from al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

  • More reinforcements from garrisons in southern Afghanistan arrived in Panjshir province on Sunday. A convoy of light and heavy trucks was observed carrying approximately 1,000 additional fighters. Sources stated the reinforcements were ordered into the province following the defense minister’s recent visit where he heard complaints from local commanders regarding a lack of forces and transport vehicles to effectively deal with Resistance forces. Discussions with the minister became heated and accusations were made between local commanders and the Kabul delegation.

  • After a security incident involving the Minister of Defense in Nangarhar, sources stated that approximately 4 non-combatants have been arrested and are being interrogated. No further information was available.

NEXT 24 HOURS:

  • Sources say the Taliban are planning to launch additional attacks against three NRF strongholds in Panjshir. Vehicle convoys were staging on the outskirts of Bazarak to move troops and heavy weapons in to support the attacks. The NRF bases intended to be targeted are currently not known.

  • Additional arrests are expected to take place in Nangarhar as a result of information gleaned from the interrogation of individuals suspected of complicity in the recent security incident involving the Minister of Defense.
