LAST 24 HOURS:
A security incident appears to have taken place during Defense Minister Yaqoob’s visit to Nangarhar. Although the Taliban have dismissed a video taken of the incidents as “fake” and stated that nothing occurred, multiple outlets reported that an assassination attempt had been made but the attacker was foiled by the minister’s bodyguards. The video clearly shows a disturbance, and the Minister Yaqoob was quickly ushered away by his security. A second video was released on social media that shows approximately 5 bodies who were said to be the minister’s bodyguards. There have been multiple false reports about attacks on senior leaders since the Taliban seized power. At this time, the Afghan Digest can’t confirm or deny the validity of the reports. However, sources stated that orders were subsequently issued to security forces in Nangarhar to “find the plotters”.
A source stated a third attack on the power grid in Samangan province was aborted when the detonator for the explosives failed. The unidentified group removed the explosives and departed the area without incident.
The Supreme Council of Resistance, a group of high-ranking leaders of the former regime who recently met in Ankara, released a statement rejecting the Taliban’s call for former officials to return for a possible Loya Jirga. The Council called the plan for a national assembly a ploy.
NEXT 24 HOURS:
Security forces in Nangarhar are expected to begin searching houses and looking for known anti-Taliban elements in the area. An order directing the forces to begin these activities was issued shortly after the Minister of Defense left the province.
Tajikistan is planning another security roundup in several towns in the Eastern portions of the country. Police and security forces have been staged in two locations, and it is said they are planning to arrest approximately 12 men who have been implicated in anti-government demonstrations.

Major Challenges Ahead as Violence Returns to Afghanistan
By Charles Lister – Asharq al-Awsat
In a recent investigative report, the US Defense Department’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) concluded that “the single most important factor” behind the Taliban’s swift takeover in August 2021 was “the US decision to withdraw military forces and contractors from Afghanistan.” Days later, the UK Foreign Affairs Committee issued a report labeling the withdrawal from Afghanistan a “disaster,” a “betrayal,” and the result of “systemic failures” to plan ahead and prevent a Taliban victory.
