From the Editor: The Afghan Digest will be changing our publishing schedule in order to better serve our readers around the world. Publishing times will now be focused on GMT +4:30 to ensure Afghan readers receive the DEB earlier in the morning.
LAST 24 HOURS:
Severe weather has created dangerous road conditions across several provinces in the country. Reports of traffic accidents have risen.
Sources claimed that Mullah Baradar’s visit to Panjshir was to warn local commanders that a UN human rights envoy would be arriving to investigate atrocities and possible war crimes. He told local commanders that the envoy would mainly focus on the Paryan district.
Police scuffled with protestors in Islamabad at former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s rally to protest his ouster. Several convoys made their way into the city and pushed aside shipping containers that have been in place as blockades since the constitutional crisis in the country ensued. While some reports of injuries have come in, no deaths have been reported as of yet. The situation remains tense.
Afghan women held a demonstration in Police District 11 to protest unequal policies instituted by the Taliban. Security forces and some civilian men reputedly dispersed the protest by throwing rocks at the women.
An unconfirmed report states the bodies of a missing contingent of Taliban troops who were sent into the mountains were discovered. It is thought they died of exposure and a lack of oxygen. Local shepherds have been told to stay away from the area while they extract the bodies.
A rumor surfaced that local Taliban leaders in Herat have banned the use of tractors to harvest wheat. We have yet to verify the veracity of these claims, but earlier reporting suggested the Taliban were looking for ways to “keep the men occupied” in several provinces.
Deputy Defense Minister Mallah Fazl Mazlum arrived in Panjshir yesterday in order to help attempt to deal with the “northern problem”.
NEXT 24 HOURS:
High winds are expected to decrease in the next twenty-four hours.
More demonstrations are expected to take place in several cities in Pakistan as the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party continues to protest the former Prime Minister’s ouster. At-risk Afghans currently residing in Pakistan are encouraged to avoid the protests as police have been instructed to disrupt the rallies.
Taliban security forces in the Paryan district of Panjshir are reported to be planning to visit three sites where possible mass executions were documented. It is believed they will attempt to remove evidence of the executions and threaten locals with punishment if they reveal anything to a UN inspection team.
