LAST 24 HOURS:
Warnings about potential threats of violence during the solar new year holiday appear to have been unfounded. Although some criminal activity was reported, no large-scale terror attack has been witnessed so far.
The Security Chief in Panjshir Province, Abdul Hameed Khurasani, has been dismissed by the Provincial Governor but is refusing to acknowledge the dismissal until informed by the Ministry of the Interior. Khurasani and the Provincial Governor have been at loggerheads for the past three months.
Gains made by the afghani against the US dollar tapered off. Economists attribute the slowdown to the economic turmoil in global financial markets resulting from the Ukraine crisis.
The Taliban have officially banned the tricolor flag in favor of the white flag with Islamic scripture quoted in black ink.
NEXT 24 HOURS:
Security forces are expected to launch more targeted searches after the relatively quiet holiday. The northern districts of Kabul are expected to see the most activity.
A joint delegation of aviation industry experts from Qatar and Turkey is expected to arrive and begin assessments of the major airports in the country. Security around airports is expected to be increased for the duration of the coming week.
