Shariah Law Can Be a Tool to Empower Afghan Women

Shariah law is often pointed to as the cause of extremism and intolerance. However, many of the Taliban’s oppressive practices are in direct violation of shariah. These discrepancies can be used to advocate for women’s empowerment within the context of Islamic law.

`LAST 24 HOURS:`

Well-known Taliban General Mobin has reportedly been arrested on charges of drugging and raping young a boy in the “cheap” area of Kabul in October 2021. An unconfirmed document reputedly issued by the 12th Police District to the Kabul Police Command was supplied to The Afghan Digest and shows that a complaint was filed against General Mobin last year. We have yet to verify the veracity of the reported arrest, but reports of the rape have been periodically circulating since December 2021. The general is reportedly the chief of the Taliban’s social media team.
Qari Ruhollah Obaida has been placed in charge of the airport in Kabul.
A large convoy of approximately 200 southern Pashtun Taliban reinforcements arrived in Panjshir but are being held in reserve until commanders can devise a plan to use them.
Multiple reports have come in that frequent power interruptions and inconsistent zakat (tax/tithe) practices are adding to average Afghans’ concerns about the Taliban’s ability to govern the country. With a stagnant economy, incidents like the recent Taliban vs. Taliban clash over money extorted from coal mines in Sar-e-Pol and the heavy-handed collection of tithes among drought stricken farmers are leaving non-political Afghans wondering if the anti-corruption promises the Taliban made after the NATO withdrawal are being honored.
The Pakistani Jirga of elders arrived in Kabul for talks with the TTP, Pakistan, and the Taliban.

`NEXT 24 HOURS:`

Protests by Afghan refugees stuck in Albania while their final destination visas are processed are expected to continue. News that many would be evicted from lodging given the approaching tourist season has spread a sense of urgency among the community, and refugees are demanding the US speed up their immigration process. Further complicating matters, many NGOs supporting them have signaled they can no longer afford to support their stay.
Sources indicate the Taliban reinforcements that have steadily been arriving in Panjshir are going to be used in a new offensive soon. No details have emerged yet, but large amounts of additional fuel and ammunition have followed the troop buildup in the north. Typically, such logistical maneuvers are made in anticipation of offensive operations.
