Threat Analysis

LAST 24 HOURS:

  • The clashes reported on yesterday in Panjshir and along the Pakistan border were confirmed. Casualty counts from the separate incidents are still coming in.

  • Russia invaded Ukraine and combat operations are underway.

NEXT 24 HOURS:

  • House to house searches are being planned in the Khair Khana district of Kabul over the next several days.

  • Be wary of travel on the outskirts of Kabul for the next 48 hrs.

ANALYSIS SPOTLIGHT

UKRAINE SITUATION AND EFFECTS ON THE AFGHAN EVACUATION

CONTEXT: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could dramatically affect the situation in Afghanistan in both the near- and long-term. We have outlined our predictions below.

ANALYSIS:

  • NEAR TERM - Refugees currently moving in/around Europe should be aware of the additional stress the projected 1-5 million new Ukrainian refugees will place on immigration systems. Furthermore, the expected influx of Ukrainian refugees could overwhelm border crossings with neighboring states and throughout Europe. Afghan refugees who are traveling to Europe may experience longer travel times, and European countries will likely tighten entrance restrictions. Air transportation will be slightly disrupted and cancellations are expected throughout Europe for select airlines

  • LONG TERM – Efforts to raise funds for the Afghanistan refugee situation and to stabilize the Afghan economy will likely suffer. It is possible that some pledges made by states to the UN will be withdrawn or redirected to support efforts around Ukraine. UN agencies and other major NGOs involved in Afghanistan will be forced to deal with strains on personnel and services as they cope with a new potential crisis. The economic fallout from sanctions imposed on Russia and her allies could cause upheaval to global markets. Commodities in particular will be hard hit, and subsequent increases in transport costs will degrade the humanitarian relief efforts.

Afghani to the Dollar: $1 – 91.87 AFN (as of 25 FEB 2022)
