China has repeatedly denied it has sent troops to Afghanistan, framing any official cooperation with the Taliban as law enforcement or for counter terrorism. While police cooperation does appear to be happening, there has also been a rise in reports of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel on the ground in Afghanistan…
LAST 24 HOURS:
Mawlawi Abdul Fattah, head of Taliban’s Mines Department for Badakhshan, was assassinated in Faizabad City when a magnetic mine was attached to his vehicle and detonated in the Bagh Shah area of the city. A bodyguard was also killed in the attack, and three others were wounded. It is unclear who may have placed the mine, but sources claimed he had previously been targeted by opposition groups.
Significant troop movements along the Pakistani side of the border have been observed over the last 24 hours. Several videos of troop convoys and towed artillery show a sizable reinforcement effort is underway along the Durand Line.
A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was reported northeast of Bazarak, Panjshir. No damage or casualties were reported.
Turkey has closed its airspace to Russian military and civilian flights to Syria for three months. Unconfirmed reports have claimed the Russians transported Syrians into Ukraine and possibly Afghanistan over recent months.
NEXT 24 HOURS:
Observers will be watching both the Eastern and Western borders of Afghanistan. Iran stepped up air patrols in response to a border incident in the last 24 hours, but further hostilities are not considered likely.
The issues along the Durand Line merit closer scrutiny, and many are interested to see how the new Pakistani government deals with the recent attack on an army post in Waziristan. Based on the international outcry over airstrikes earlier in the month, a major operation is not likely, but there is concern over potential artillery strikes.
